Should I hire my first salesperson?
A practical toolkit for tech and AI founders who need a clear yes/no, a scorecard, and a hiring path — before they burn six months on the wrong AE.
Built by Ash Takher — operator who has hired and run founding sales seats.
The short answer
Hire a founding AE once you, the founder, have closed 10–20 customers through a motion you can repeat and explain — and you've become the pipeline bottleneck. If you're still working out who buys and why, wait.
Founding AE
Default first hire. Builds pipeline, closes, documents the motion. Hire when founder-led sales is working but capped.
SDR
Only when the pitch is proven and someone else can close. Hiring an SDR first usually creates meetings nobody converts.
Fractional
Useful for process, pricing and CRM hygiene pre-hire. Not a replacement for a quota-carrying seat.

Founder FAQ
When should a startup hire its first salesperson?
+
When the founder has closed 10–20 paying customers through a repeatable motion, can explain why they bought, and is the bottleneck on pipeline. Before that, you're hiring someone to find product-market fit — which is the founder's job.
Should my first sales hire be an AE or an SDR?
+
Usually an AE. An SDR needs a proven pitch and someone to hand meetings to. A founding AE can build pipeline and close, and will tell you what's broken in the motion.
Is a fractional sales leader a good first step?
+
Sometimes. Fractional works when you need process, pricing and pipeline hygiene, not hands-on closing. It's a bad substitute for a quota-carrying seat once demand is there.
Should I hire a VP Sales first?
+
Rarely. A VP without a proven motion has nothing to scale. Hire a founding AE who can sell and build; add leadership once you have two or three reps to lead.
How much should I pay a founding AE in the UK?
+
Expect a base in the £70k–£100k range with a 50/50 or 60/40 base-to-variable split, plus meaningful equity. Exact numbers depend on deal size, stage and location — use the comp module as a starting shape, not a quote.
How long does it take to hire a founding AE?
+
Plan for 8–12 weeks from a defined scorecard to signed offer, plus notice period. Most delays come from founders starting without a clear seat definition.
What's the most common founding sales hire mistake?
+
Hiring for logo pedigree. Someone who sold well with a big brand, inbound and an SE team often struggles with no brand, no playbook and a half-built product.
How quickly should a founding AE ramp?
+
Judge the first 90 days on leading indicators — pipeline created, discovery quality, feedback to product — not closed revenue. Full quota ramp typically takes 4–6 months.
